Myself, Sam and Mandeep hit the road to try and catch what would be an alignment of 3 different astrological events! High visibility of the Milky Way Galaxy, the Perseid Meteor Shower & The Northern Lights. For good measure there was also a red crescent moon, but that had long set under the horizon by the time we started.
I am still a newbie to astro-photography so it took a long time playing with settings and finding the right angles in the sky to point myself at. lots of help was provided by these two sharing tips and tricks.
Conditions tonight were shot on a 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 Sony lens. 15 Second apertures at 12800iso.
But all I needed was one shot of the Milky Way to be happy, and I got it! Right after we touched base, I was already seeing shooting stars in the sky. The weather was mild and the sky was clear. Perfect conditions.
At one point near the end of the night, I was playing on my phone camera and ended up experimenting with some light painting with Sam's help, after a happy accident of him shining his phone into my frame.
Around 1:30am, the light show started. At this point my battery had given up on me (it's an old camera)
Luckily I recently upgraded to an iPhone 13 and it held its own out in the field. Not exactly the quality of images I would have wanted, but it's an upgrade from my previous attempt at the lights. Third time's the charm, right?
